Some Work and Some Play

With diesel and water topped off, it’s time to leave Jost Van Dyke and head to Trellis Bay, on the south end of Tortola, to meet a guy about a prop. I may have mentioned in a previous post that our dingy prop is spinning and needs replacing, so that’s where we’re heading. It’s Wednesday and we are approaching the end of our trip, so we are plotting our course to both see more of the area and find a great spot for our last night. The plan is to head to Trellis Bay, get the prop replaced, then go to Marina Cay for the night, then either Soper’s Hole on Tortola or Great Harbor at Peter Island. Great Harbor it is. Looks quiet with only a single restaurant and tall hills that meet the water. A perfect last night.

The sail from Jost Van Dyke to Trellis was pretty straight forward. We dropped the sails around the eastern end of Tortola and motored into the harbor. There is a super small airport here and its runway extends over the water a bit, clearly marked by yellow bouys defining the rectangle that is the last part of the airport. The guy from Conch Charters met us there and replaced the prop in under five minutes. Now, we can dingy with confidence. Off to Marina Cay, which is only about a 15 minute motor across the harbor. (Everything is much closer than we expected).

Once settled onto a mooring at Marina Cay, we searched out some snorkeling. We found some of the best snorkeling so far, unexpectedly in between the Marina Cay moorings and the Marriott hotel marina. The reef looked spectacular with a variety of coral, large schools of fish and a few really big fish. An octopus’ garden.  We spent a couple of hours amazed by the under water world.

Another great day and evening. Night was a bit different. The weather and winds picked up a lot. Both Debbie and I were up occasionally through the night to either close hatches or check that we, or our neighbors, were not floating away and that our newly invigorated dingy was still with us. There have been a couple of nights where every sound rises suspicion and needs checking.
